South Dakota DOT number requirements

No general rule. South Dakota does not require a USDOT number for intrastate-only carriers as a class, but federal rules can still apply, including to interstate trips and some hazardous materials loads. Haul Handbook last verified this record Sep 27, 2026.

The South Dakota intrastate rule

Federal USDOT registration depends on the vehicle and operation. The rows below show what South Dakota requires for carriers operating inside the state. Our state DOT number requirements table holds the same answer for every state. A field reading "Not confirmed" means this guide has no verified figure for that field.

USDOT for intrastate carriers
No general requirement
Weight trigger
South Dakota publishes no weight trigger for a state USDOT mandate because it issues no intrastate USDOT rule at all. The commercial regime of SDCL ch. 32-9 turns on use, not weight: a commercial motor vehicle is any vehicle used or maintained to haul persons or property for hire, compensation or profit, or designed, used, or maintained mainly to haul property, with small-load and farm exceptions in SDCL 32-9-3. Nothing in that chapter asks for a USDOT number.
On FMCSA's intrastate list
No
Statute
No South Dakota statute requires intrastate carriers to hold a USDOT number. SDCL ch. 32-9, the intrastate commercial registration chapter, creates the commercial motor vehicle certificate and its weight-based fee without mentioning a USDOT number, and SDCL 32-10-8 preserves Public Utilities Commission intrastate authority only where a grant is otherwise required by law. Rather than cite a chapter for a rule it does not contain, this record states the confirmed absence.

The SD Truck Info portal ties USDOT identification numbers to interstate commerce (motor carriers engaged in interstate commerce must have a USDOT number) and lists no USDOT requirement in its Intrastate Carriers section, which instead points to county title and registration, commercial plates, permits, and the handbook. Treat the answer as a confirmed absence read from the official portal's own structure.

South Dakota carrier-number record

No CA number, TxDMV Number, or New York DOT number analog exists in South Dakota. The number carried in the cab is the commercial motor vehicle certificate number assigned to each vehicle under SDCL 32-9-7, endorsed on the application and receipt; it is a vehicle registration number, so a fleet holds one per truck rather than one per carrier.

Where a South Dakota carrier enrolls

Registration goes to the agency that issues each credential; the federal process is covered step by step in our guide to getting a USDOT number. Filing services resell these same applications, so the rows below name the direct channel first.

Create a user profile, complete identity verification, and create a company account in Motus to apply for a USDOT number and the registrations your operation needs. Claim your existing USDOT record in Motus using the company official’s Login.gov email, then manage registrations or apply for additional authority. See the Motus account guide before opening or claiming your record.

County treasurers (in-state commercial license for intrastate work); South Dakota Department of Revenue, Motor Carrier Services in Pierre (IRP and IFTA for interstate work)

Motor Carrier Connect (IRP and IFTA accounts); county treasurer offices (in-state commercial license)

The 2025 IRP Manual requires new motor carrier accounts to be completed online at Motor Carrier Connect. The in-state commercial license is bought from the county treasurer of the carrier's county of residence on Department of Revenue forms, before operations begin (SDCL 32-9-6).

The SD Truck Info portal sends interstate carriers to FMCSA for the USDOT number. An intrastate-only carrier faces no state application that asks for one; what the county application asks for is the vehicle's maker, factory number, engine number, model, and desired gross weight classification (SDCL 32-9-6).

Once a number is active, anyone can pull the public record behind it; our DOT number lookup guide shows how to read that snapshot the way brokers and enforcement do, and the MC number lookup reads the live record back for a number you type in.

The same number carries your safety history. Every roadside inspection written against it feeds the CSA percentiles a broker's vetting platform reads after it checks your authority and insurance, and a violation recorded in error is corrected through DataQs, not by the state agency that issued the credential above.

The state registration triggers behind it

These are the operations that pull a carrier into South Dakota's own motor carrier registration, where the DOT number rules above attach. The full credential, fees, and insurance filings live on the South Dakota intrastate authority page.

Weight trigger
The intrastate commercial regime is triggered by use, not by a weight threshold. A commercial motor vehicle is any motor vehicle used or maintained for the transportation of persons or property for hire, compensation or profit, or designed, used, or maintained primarily for the transportation of property, unless specifically excluded by SDCL 32-9-3. That chapter excepts, among others, South Dakota registered vehicles carrying 500 pounds or less of private business property, farmer-owned vehicles used for the farmer's own farming operation, and vehicles used exclusively on job sites. No 26,001 pound or similar GVWR trigger exists in chapter 32-9.

Where the number fits in the South Dakota launch

Registration numbers come early: they exist before insurance binds and before the first load. Frequently asked questions

Does South Dakota require a USDOT number for intrastate trucking?

Not as a general rule for carriers that operate only inside South Dakota. Federal rules can still require a USDOT number for your operation, including interstate trips and some hazardous materials loads.

Does South Dakota issue its own carrier number?

This guide does not confirm a separate South Dakota carrier number. The note above explains what the state uses instead, where it says.

Do I have to pay a filing service to get a USDOT number?

No. You can register directly with FMCSA yourself, and the state credential applications on this page go straight to the state agency through the portal it names. Third-party filing services resell those same applications; nothing on this page requires one.

Where do these facts come from?

Each row cites the agency page, statute or rule it was read from, with the date the record was last verified. A field this guide could not confirm is labeled Not confirmed rather than filled with a guess.

Haul Handbook publishes educational information about trucking registration and compliance requirements. This is not legal, financial, or tax advice. Rules, fees, and deadlines change; confirm with the agency before you file or pay.
